Officially The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is a state in the New England region of the North Eastern part of the United States,it is bordered by Rhode Island , Connecticut to the south New York to the west and Vermont and New Hampshire to the north.at its east lies The Atlantic Ocean.
Massachusetts is the 7th smallest but the 14th most populous and the third most densely populated in the 50 States. Two thirds of Massachusetts population live in the greater Boston area. Massachusetts has played a significant historical and cultural role in American history Plymouth was the site of the Colony founded in 1620 by the pilgrims passengers of the Mayflower. Harvard University founded in 1636 is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. Before the Civil War Massachusetts was the Centre of temperemence and abolitionists movements. Mount Holyoke College was the first college for women. In the late 19th century the (now ) Olympic sports of basketball and volleyball were invented in the western Massachusetts cities of Springfield and Holyoke. During the 20th Century Massachusetts economy shifted from manufacturing to services, in the 21st century Massachusetts is a leader in Higher Education, Health Care Technology, High Technology and Financial Services..Massachusetts was the sixth State to be admitted to the Union on February the 6th 1788. The State Capital is Boston and is known as "The Bay State."
