Singapore.

  SINGAPORE :      (Journey # 1 )

" The Battle Box "  Fort Canning...
Being a military history" buff" , while I was In Singapore there were many World War II sites to visit as Australia was very much involved in the fight here..of special significance was the 'Battle Box" at Fort Canning.which was The Headquarters Malay Command of British and Allied Forces in Singapore. This was  a huge underground network of tunnels and various rooms that was a hive of activity after the Japanese Invasion of Singapore. , and it was HERE that General Percival made the incredible decision to surrender all the British and Allied Forces in Singapore.. Many thousands of Australian troops that had just arrived were taken into captivity ...a brutal captivity which would see so many killed building The Burma Railway.. I visited The Changi War Cemetary and was priveledged to be there on Anzac Day and so was able to Attend the Dawn Service in comemoration of all these poor wretches that were to die here brutally tortured, and worked to death by the barbaric Japanese prison Officers and Guards.while others died in prison camps..This is such a wonderfully kept Cemetary and looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission along with the help of Singapore Government.
The "Battle Box " was sealed off after the war in 1945 and refurbished in 1996..with those moments in history re-created for all to see. This is an amazing place to visit with so much War memorabilia and the rooms still the way they were then.
This is a souvenir card from my stopover Singapore  and to see so many of  Singapore's Military  venues .
This was a major stop on my "Around the World by Train "journey  Posted  home April 2009..
