Sri Lankas Elephants :
Situated in the south east of the country hugging the coast of the Indian Ocean. Yala National Park was designated a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1900 and was then designated a National Parrk in 1938. Ironically the park was initially used for a hunting ground for the elite under British rule,. Yala is home to 44 species of  mammals and 125 different species of birds , among its famous residents are  the worlds largest concentration of Leopards  , Elephants ,Sloth Bears Sombars, jackals Spotted Deer , Peacocks and Crocodiles . The best time to visit Yala National Parkis between February and July when the water levels of the park  bring the animals out in the open.

Kandy: SRI LANKA.

A train journey of some five hours from The Main Railway Station ( The Fort ) in Colombo sees my arrival in Kandy. I travel on this trip 2nd Class as all of 1st  class is booked ..but I prefer the second class journey.. Here once again I try to locate a friend as I want to photograph some elephants..I hire a Tuk Tuk for the day and get to visit many different sites on the day ..The most prominent site for me was the "Elephant Bath" a local Elephant foundation for the preservation of the Elephants here.. Located about 80 kilometers  out of Kandy at a place called Pennuwalla.This is where you can get in the river with the elephants and "bathe an elephant" this was quite different...safety always a factor... and although all the elephants had a "mahout",   I was a bit dissapointed with their leg chains...on the day , on my Tuk- Tuk journey, I also visited a Spice garden, Tea Plantation where one tried the various flavours , and can purchase the local product..we stopped also at a Botanical Garden with various lovely tropical flowers and plants.
    Most afternoons see a thunderstorm with heavy rain but at least it cools things down...here because of its elevation the days a are a little cooler. I stop for my daily coconut water (milk ) I love it.. so refreshing...so inexpensive and safer than local water...and nourishing as well.. a win win.The woman makes short work of the coconut with her big sharp knife..

Wildlife Cards are among my favourite cards to receive..This is a lovely card of two Elephants with embracing trunks !!! I don't know where these elephants are from as there is no information on the card...but is a lovely card that I chose to have for a swap.Thank you Irena for this nice cards and stamps.

A lovely colourful card showing the dancers and costumes of this large celebration held in the city of Kandy in July and August every year  "Perahara." celebrating their local historical event. The elephants look absolutely grand all dressed in their colourful costumes also..Thank you Dini..love this card a great swap...

 Love this card showing this majestic Elephant  and wonder to myself about thier decimation...it makes you want to cry...This lovely card was sent to me from a friend in port Elizabeth South Africa . Although They have been hunted for so long and are now protected the hunting persists.
Elephants run towards the water with their trunks in the air to smell the water and also to search for predators that might be waiting.Elephants eat between 170 - 300 Kilograms of plant matter a day. They are three to four meters high and calf every four to five years. Thank you so much Leone for this card.

 A nice card showing a group of Pygmy Elephants in The Kinabatangan River in Sabah.The Kinabatangan river is the second longest river in Malaysia with a length of 560 kilometers from its headwaters in the mountains of South West Sabah to its outlet in the Sulu Sea.East of Sandakan The cards shows a few Pygmy Elephants bathing.Thank you Anny for this card I love it. I love wildlife.

 A wonderful card showing a Herd of Asian Elephants ( Elephas Maximus Zeylanicus ) in one of the sanctuaries of the National Park in Sri Lanka.. So wonderful to see now that there are  many sanctuaries to protect these wonderful animal.and that we have to have them in sanctuaries for protection. A symbol of the country of Sri Lanks so important to protect them. Thank you so much for this lovely card Treshi..

A wonderful photo of this Elephant on the charge..Most Elephants mock the charge  to scare off an offender and usually stop before the target is reached.Serious charges occur if all else fails to intimidate the offender.Thank you Amanda for this nice card.
