Macquarie Island : AUSTRALIA.:
A lovely recently released card from Australia Post from Macquarie Island .love it and the dogs looking after the Royal Penguins there ..breeding on the Island.
Macquarie Island is located in the south west Pacific half way between New Zealand and Antarctica. Politically a part of the state of Tasmania in 1900 and became a Tasmanian State reserve in 1978 and Unesco World Heritage site in 1997. The Island is the home entirely to the Royal Penguin during their annual nesting season.
Ecologically . the Island is part of the Antipodes Sub Antarctic Islands Tundra Eco division. Since 1948 Australia Antarctic Division has maintained a permanent base known as The Macquarie Island Station on an isthmus at the northern end of the island at the foot of wireless Hill.The population of the base, the only human habitation usually varies from 20 to 40 persons over the year.A heliport is located near the base.
