Louisiana is Located in the Southern Region of the United States.Louisiana is the 31st most extensive and the 25th most populous of the fifty States. The Capital City is Baton Rouge and the largest City is New Orleans Louisiana is the only state in the country to have political sub divisions called Parishes Which are local governments with the equivalent of counties.Louisiana is bordered to the west by Texas, to the north by Arkansas,to the west by Missisippi and to the south by the Gulf of Mexico Louisiana has a sub tropical humid climate and is quite often the victim of large Hurricanes ..The worst most recent was Hurricane 'Katrina" on August 29 th 2005 Katrina struck the southern part of Louisiana undermining and destroying levees and causing 80% New Orleans to be flooded with most of the population being evacuated and left homeless.. There were 1500 fatalities in Louisiana alone.Owing to its location and Geology the state has a very high biological diversity..There are many protected areas including a lot of National Park sites and areas of United States National Forrest.Louisiana operates a system of 22 State Parks,17 Historical Sites and a large state preservation area. some areas "Creole" language is spoken as well as English. Louisiana became a US State on April 30th 1812.
