FAILAKA ISLAND     KUWAIT.

Failaka Isaland : KUWAIT.:
Located 20 kilometers off the coast of Kuwait City in the Persian Gulf lies  Failaka Island. The name Failaka is thought to be derived from the Ancient Greek word for "outpost".Failaka Island is located in the northern part of the Persian gulf and springtime on Failaka Island is regarded as a very special time for Kuwaitis as it has a very different Eco -system than Kuwait.
Prior to the Iraqi Invasion of 1990 the island had over 2000 residents and several schools . The village of Az Zawr is situated near the middle of the northwest side of the Island and was the longest continuously inhabited location in Kuwait. , during 1990 and 1991 The invading Iraqis depopulated the Island expelling all of its residents to the mainland. The Iraqi Military mined the beaches and used the Islands buildings and facilities for target practice and so destroying so much of the Island and many ancient structures many dating back over 4,000 years...After the war the Island was cleared of mines and remains under military use, many destroyed military vehicles can still be seen....Failaka Island is becoming a popular holiday destination with a ferry ( Ikarus ) running  passengers to the island from Kuwait City.
Thank you so much Diane for taking the time out to send this by touchphone....great..
