Java: INDONESIA.:
This is one of four nice wildlife cards that I have received from a friend postcard swapper in Indonesia. This card shows the The Sundra Rhinoceros ( Lesser one horned Rhinoceros ) or commonly known as The Javan Rhinoceros ( Rhinoceros Sondaicus ) and is a very rare member of the family (rhinocerotidae ) and one of five extant rhinoceroses and belongs to the same gender as the Indian Rhinoceros. and has the same mosaicked armour like skin but at 3.1 - 3.2 meters in length and from 1.4 - 1.7 meters in height it is smaller ( in fact it is closer in size to the black rhinoceros of the gene Diceros) its horn is usually 25 cms smaller than the other of the Rhino species..Only the males have the horns and the females lack them altogeather. This species is critically endangered with only one known population in the wild and with none in captivity and is probably one of the rarest large mammals on earth with as few as 40 in The Ujong Kulong National Park at the western tip of Java.
Thank you so much Mia for this lovely card and wonderful stamp set commemorating the preservation of this Rhinoceros. So kind of you..I hope that they continue to preserve this species.
