Norfolk Island ( AU )
A really nice recent " First Day release" stamped 22 July 2014, Maxi Card from Australia Post. showing the "Old Miltary Barracks" on Norfolk Island . a really attractive card.
Norfolk Island is a small Island in The Pacific Ocean that lies between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. 1412 Kilometers ( 877 miles ) directly east of Australia's mainland "Evans Head" and about 900 kilometers (560 miles ) from Lord Howe Island. The island was originally settled by East Polynesians and colonised by Great Britain in a settlement of Australia in 1788. The Island served as a Convict penal settlement until 1855 , except for an 11 year hiatus between the years of 1814 to 1825 when it was abandoned . In 1856 permanent civilian residence on the Island began when it was settled from Pittcairn Island. In 1901 it became part of the Commonwealth of Australia. Although it is part of the Commonwealth of Australia the Island enjoys a large degree of self governance . The evergreen Norfolk Island Pine is a symbol of the Island and is thus on its flag. The Norfolk Island Pine is a large export industry for the Island The population of the Island is 2,300. The Capital is Kingston, and the largest city is Burnt Pine. This island is a very popular holiday and honeymoon destination for Australians.
