Rottnest Island : WA. (Journey #2 )
Known as Wadjemup by the local Noongah people (meaning place across the water ) Rottnest Island is located 18 kilometers (11miles) off the Coast of Fremantle in Western Australia. An extremely unique Island and known for its wildlife and this Island sees up to 500,000 visitors a year tourism being a major industry here with most visitors arriving by Ferry Boats, some by air from
the mainland . The island is administered by the Western Australian Board of Tourism..Private ownership of land is not allowed. The major town is Thompson Bay and the island has a population of some 300. The only vehicles on the Island are Emergency vehicles and local busses .This is an extremely pristine Island with over 50 beaches. When I was there I found that all the bicycles had been hired and I used the local bus system and also walked a lot...The local animals (Quokkas ) are unique to the Island .This card is a souvenir from my visit here..such a great Island to visit. This was another interesting place while staying in Perth and is another stop on my "Around the World by Train " journey. Posted Rottnest Is. 07 April 2009. ( no post office cancellation stamp )
