A great card showing and old Australian Air Force.  RAAF  DC3 Dakota  A65-122 aircraft sitting at her final resting place in the  Lae Botanical Gardens New Guinea. I am sure that this old aircraft would have some amazing tales to tell about its own exploits.  Thank you so much for thinking of me  Rianna sending this fine card..

Another "Did You Know " card for the collection. I really like these most informative cards and love to receive them. This particular card is about the fascinating stories of the 42 cemeteries in The New Orleans area.ie:: Marie Laveau the "Voodoo Queen" is buried in a crypt  in St Louis #1 cemetery.  St Louis Cemetery # 1 is the oldest and most famous and it opened in 1789.The High water table would make the Caskets float so in New Orleans has above ground vaults for burials !!

This is where it all started ..The war that tore America apart.. Fort Sumter, Charleston South Carolina. Fort Sumter was the scene of the opening battle that lead to the Civil War on April 12th 1861.After a 34 hour siege the fort, Commanded by Major Robert Anderson and his detatchment of Union troops surrendered. The Fort was then occupied by the Confederates and remained in their hands until shortly before the end of the war on February 17 1865..

Great light on the subject promotes the figure laying back on this tree branch..  I really like cards of wildlife and this card from Alaska shows the famous Alaskan Musk Ox. This rare species is found only in the worlds arctic regions and are amazing to watch as they "crash" into each other with furious head butting attacks on each other during mating season.

Philippines.

Corregidor: PHILIPPINES:

This card card arrived yesterday from the Philippines ...once again a great card that I chose for a swap.. The card shows a pair of large Mortars standing quiet now in their emplacements but back in 1940's these heavy mortars were smoking in an effort to fend off the attacking Japanese forces.. This was an Island Fortress and the last bastion of defence west of Manilla and saw lots of gallantry here , and as Corregidor  lies in the mouth of Manilla bay it was here that the forces of the USA and The local Phillipinos fought the Japanese and in many instances" hand to hand" to repel the invasion..
 Thank you Chloe once again for a nice swap card and with lots of local military history.

Whenever I am in any town or city in the tropics the markets are a must.. The fruits are all there, and with tropical fruits there is always such a wide selection...a great healthy meal , and usually very inexpensive. Here In Port Villa the markets were full of the locals buying their fresh fruits and vegetables, of special interest to me was watching the local de- husking the coconuts,  always if possible I get my fresh coconut milk..straight from the coconut is just wonderful...for me one of the best drinks on the planet.. Vanuatu is a coconut Island with literally hundreds of thousands of Coconut trees.. as the main industry used to be copra...until that was overtaken by tourism..but the trees are still here..

The second of these two great Concorde cards that i have just received . Showing this marvellous aircraft taking off..what a sight.. This card shows the Concorde SST 214.. 1978- 2003: Velocity Mach2.04 this was also in Exeter in July 1990.

  THE BATTLE OF COCOS ISLANDS.19th  NOVEMBER 1914.:
         A lovely Centenary commemoration card of the Battle of the Cocos Islands: Stamped Sydney"s Garden Island  9-11-15.
 Under the command of Capt. Carl von Mueller  SMS Emden was detatched from the south China seas and sent to Raid the Cocos Islands , Mueller landed a detachment of sailors on the island to destroy the Islands British facilities. On the 9th November 1914 while cruising in the Indian Ocean The Captain of  Australian Battleship The H.M.A.S.in response to a wireless message from Cocos island regarding the Emden at the entrance to their harbour quickly.identified and attacked the The German raider SMS Emden. The more powerful Australian Battleship quickly overwhelmed The Emden causing severe damage and casualties .This forced Mueller to run his ship aground to prevent her from sinking,and beached her on North Keeling island. out of a crew of 376 133 were killed in the battle while most of the survivors were taken prisoner.The Landing party led by Hellmuth  von Muke escaped commandeering an old schooner and returning to Germany.

I received these two lovely cards of The Concorde (this is one ) the most amazing passenger aircraft built...This was a joint venture between Britain and France and have always admired this aircraft and would have loved to have taken a flight while it was in Service.
This is a card showing the SST Concorde  204. from 1978 -2003. This had a Mach. velocity of 2.4.
 The location is in Exeter UK July 1987.The card is a Commemoration card of Italian National Aeronautical Acrobatic teams. A first day Release ..stamped by Philatelic Exposition  30. January 2015..

HLUBOKA CASTLE.

Hluboka: CZECH REPUBLIC.:

 I received this beautiful card showing this most magnificent castle..The "Hluboka Castle" is situated in Hluboka nad Vltavou..This is considered to be one of the most beautiful castles in The Czech Republic, in the second half of the Thirteenth Century a Gothic castle was built on this site and during its history it was rebuilt several times. The renaissance period saw a vast expansion and then it was rebuilt into a Baroque castle at the order from Adam Franz von Schwartzenburg in the beginning of the 18th Century.The Castle reached its current appearance during the 19th Century when  Johann Adolf II von Schwatzenburg ordered its reconstruction in the romantic style of Windsor Castle. The Schwartzenburgs lived in Hluboka till the end of 1939 when the last owner  Adolf Schwartzenburg emigrated overseas to avoid the Nazis. Then the property was lost through a special act. The Property now is  ( Hluboka Castle )  a National Monument of The Czech Republic.

Located in the Bristol Channel, Lundy Island is the biggest island in the Channel and lies12 miles (19 klms ) off the coast of Devon, England about one third of the distance across the Channel from Devon , England to South Wales. Lundy gives its name to the British sea area and is one of the Islands of England. Lundy has been designated by Natural England as natural Character area 159 one of England's Natural regions. Lundy Island is England's first National Statutory Marine Nature Reserve and the first Marine Conservation zone because of its unique flora and fauna, it is managed by the landmark trust on behalf of the National Trust. The entire island has been designated as a site of  special Scientific interest.
 Lundy Island has an area of  445 ha  (1100 acres ) with a population around thirty residents including rangers etc  Most visitors are "Day Trippers " although there are 23 holiday properties and a camp site for staying visitors mainly around the southern part of the Island.

Here is the last of the Three lovely cards that I received from a friend in Malaysia showing the three species of these" Rafflesia" Flowers that are found there..There are 15 varieties of the Rafflesia Flowers and they are reputed to be the largest flowers in the world... This particular type is the "Rafflesia Pricei"although not the largest of the three found in Sabah this is the most popular variety.
