THE BATTLE OF COCOS ISLANDS.19th NOVEMBER 1914.:
A lovely Centenary commemoration card of the Battle of the Cocos Islands: Stamped Sydney"s Garden Island 9-11-15.
Under the command of Capt. Carl von Mueller SMS Emden was detatched from the south China seas and sent to Raid the Cocos Islands , Mueller landed a detachment of sailors on the island to destroy the Islands British facilities. On the 9th November 1914 while cruising in the Indian Ocean The Captain of Australian Battleship The H.M.A.S.in response to a wireless message from Cocos island regarding the Emden at the entrance to their harbour quickly.identified and attacked the The German raider SMS Emden. The more powerful Australian Battleship quickly overwhelmed The Emden causing severe damage and casualties .This forced Mueller to run his ship aground to prevent her from sinking,and beached her on North Keeling island. out of a crew of 376 133 were killed in the battle while most of the survivors were taken prisoner.The Landing party led by Hellmuth von Muke escaped commandeering an old schooner and returning to Germany.
