Adelaide: SA

A nice surprise today from a fellow Postcrosser is this lovely card showing The State Flower of South Australia. The Sturt Desert Pea. This flower named after a famous early Australian explorer is a truly beautiful flower/s that can grow in really dry conditions . They grow in clumps and are one of my favourite Australian wildflowers. Their shiny appearance gives them a look that they are made of wax.. Thank you Jenny for this nice card. This is the first concesson stamp on a card that I have received..This stamp is a concession stamp issued to pensioners in Australia so as no one loses the chance to contact their friends..I believe that this is a great service to our senior citizens and is to be applauded. A small book of stamps is issued each year to the person and has stamps enclosed that can only be used within Australia at no cost to the sender.

THE MIGHTY GHAN.

ADELAIDE SOUTH AUSTRALIA.  THE MIGHTY "GHAN" TAKES ME  NORTH TO DARWIN IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY.

A LONG WALK BACK TO MY CARRIAGE  NEARLY A KILOMETER LONG TRAIN !

THIS STOP IN CATHERINE .I WILL  VISIT THE GORGE WHILE I AM  HERE .
HISTORY OF "THE GHAN" THIS AMAZING  TRAINLINE FROM STH. AUSTRALIA TO THE  NORTHERN TERRITORY .
WELCOME TO "THE ALICE "RED CENTRE!

THE GHAN ARRIVES AT THE MAIN STATION ALICE SPRINGS.. GET OFF HERE.!!!

This card shows the Ghan train passing by the Mac Donnell  Ranges in South Australia on its long journey north to Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. This is one of the" Great Train Journeys of the World" and I find this to be another, of Australia's Great Train Journeys that I take , as I had just gotten off the" Indian Pacific "( after my trip from Sydney to Adelaide) ,. that travels     Australia's continent East to West.  Once again I am travelling in a budget "Sleep Seat" that is quite comfortable and the train has a  good snack bar and caeteria also bar !
This Train Journey now will take me from south to north across the middle of the Australian continent. I am on my way north to Darwin and will make a stop off at Alice Spriings for some excursions inland .. Also many people take their cars on this train so that they can also enjoy the train ride and can drive back to Adelaide. This  was to be at the beginning of my  long "Around the World by Train" trip.

The trip on The Ghan starts for me in Adelaide's "Parklands " Train Terminal and a long journey of some 2500 + kilometers to travel to Darwin. This trip will take the better part of two days with a stop at Port Augusta in South Australia before I leave the train and will break the journey at Alice Springs  (25 hours away ) to enjoy the marvels of Australia's " Red Centre"  .there  I will take a road-camping trip through the "Red Heart " traveling to The National Parks of  "Kata Tjuta", (The Olgas ) and "Uluru", (Ayers Rock ) . Later on this journey I will also visit two more amazing National Parks  "Whatarrka" National Park ( Kings Canyon.).so much spectacular scenery and extremely spiritual areas in these amazing National Parks.and" Nitmiluk".at the next train stop in Catherine !
Darwin City was quite hot although it was in the wintertime .I have had a very interesting time here in "The Alice " with good accomodation and have met some great people on that big roadtrip. So, is time to  join the train once again at Alice Springs  train Station to finish the journey north to Darwin City.with one more stop at "Nitmiluk " ( Katherine Gorge) National Park.."Wow" .This is an amazing train journey and one I would take again...To be seen also south of Darwin are the Amazing( "Kakadu" ) National Park famous for its prolific birdlife and also ("Litchfield ") National Park...so many to see in this amazing Territory and most amazing scenery that one can imagine. Will post more on these National Parks in a future post !

Adelaide : SA.

A great card showing the " Ghan" and its route between The cities of Adelaide in South Australia to the city of Darwin in the Northern Territory a distance of some 2, 500 kilometers..This is a wonderful Journey and one of the "Great Train Journeys of the World."  Visitors and" train buffs" come from allover to ride this train. The name "The Ghan " derives from the early explorers with camels that took this route across country and the cameleers were from Afghanistan hence the name the "Ghan". A lot of travellers take their car on the train so as to not have to drive both ways due to the long distances.. Thank you Denny and Angel once again for a lovely card of your travels...

Hahndorf :  SA.     (Journey #1 )      " A Bratwurst mit Senf und Kartoffel Salat "Bitte"
   A German Town.:

The Ice Creamery in Hahndorf  famous for its" Bum Burner" sausages

Hahndorf just a lovely small town

Hahndorfs Main Street..so quiet

Fountain in King Georges Park Adelaide..
Adelaide.: South Australia.
This was a really enjoyable day with a visit to the German town of Hahndorf located in the high country outside Adelaide.. South Australia.. They certainly do it well here as most of the residents are related to the original German settlers from the 1800's.. They were experts at growing the much needed fresh vegetables for the local community and the city of Adelaide.. this is an icon of a little Town with the German influence and still proud of their original Heritage, so much in evidence.. Great Bratwurst  and Potato Salad ( my favourite ) and a few cold German Lowenbrau beers    Originally named The Australian Arms Hotel transferring to the present site in 1863. Then changed the name to the Union Hotel it was named the Hahndorf Inn in 1972 originally built as a single story ,a second floor was added in the 1880's The bottle shop next door was originally a blacksmiths...Oh! and don't forget to try the advertised "Bum Burner " sausages..
A souvenir postcard posted home.  This was a day side trip by local bus to Hahndorf from Adelaide City one of many paces visited while staying  there on my "Around the World by Train" journey.

Cook.S.A.   ( Journey # 2)

We stop in this tiny outpost called Cook .this is a regular stop for water for the Indian Pacific Train
Situated on the Longest stretch of straight railway in the world being 478 kilometers without a bend. as far as the eye can see to the horizon the Nullabor Plains in Australia is treeless ( Null  Arbor = no trees)  The Town of Cook today boasts a population of 5 people compared to an old historical population that supported a school,Hospital and many other facilities to support the community.Cook is the major stop for trains crossing the Nullabor. A very interesting little outback town.
Souvenir card posted home from my trip across the Nullabor Plains on the great "Indian Pacific" Train as part of my "Around the World by Train journey ". Posted 30 March 2009
