Australia
I like this card of a favourite Australian wildlife icon.. The Tasmanian (Tassie) Devil..a fearsome looking fellow that has had many problems recently with a Facial fungal disease that was wiping them out in large numbers fearing they would become extinct.. and as they were not in Large numbers that it is was of great concern for scentists to find an answer .. This I beleive is an ongoing problem with great inroads being made in their defence..current programmes are in place by The Tasmanian Government to halt the impact of this deadly disease by initiating a build up of healthy "devils" in captivity isolated from the disease to save the species..
The Tasmanian devil is a marsupial animal .once native to the Australian Mainland and only now found in Tasmania and some of East coast of Maria Island which has a small conservation project of disease free animals. The size of a small dog this carnivourous marsupial became the largest Carnivourous Marsupial in the world following the extinction of the "Thylacine" ( Tasmanian Tiger ).in 1936. ,,it is related to Quolls and distantly related to the Thylacine. The Tasmanian Devil is an iconic symbol and also made famous by the "Looney Tunes" Character of the same name.

This "maxi card" is a card in a recent released series.."Animals in War " and is also a commemoration of those animals that were in the various wars affecting Australia. This card shows the fantastic (Waler Horses ) of the Australian Light Horse ( A.L.H. ) These horses were all Australian horses that were procured for the military from many parts of the country. that went on board the many ships with the men That sailed from King Georges Sound in Western Australia to the many various battlefields in the middle east and north Africa. This conflict had a huge affect on the country and its peoples as the losses were so many for such a small population so much so, that there were some country towns and villages that were virtually devoid of men after this war..This photo showing a light horse regiment on the march ..could be in Egypt , Syria , or Palestine. I have such an admiration for these soldiers and their amazingly tough horses ...some carried their riders thousands of miles into the many different battles..My father was a light horsemen in Egypt and Palestine.

THE BEAUTIFUL SUGAR GLIDER. |
AUSTRALIA.:
This is one of my favourite Australian native animals, unfortuneatly its population is taking a huge toll by feral cats.. The Sugar glider is a small omnivourous, aboreal, and nocturnal gliding possum belonging to the marsupial infraclass. The common name refers to its preference to sugary nectars and its ability to glide through the air much like a flying squirrel. Due to the convergent evolution they have very similar appearance and habits to "The Flying Squirrel" but are not closely related.. Sugar Gliders are found throughout eastern and northern Australia and in Tasmania.I love this card.

THE PLATYPUS ( Ornithorhynchus Anatinus ) |
Any series of "Australian Native Animals" could not be complete without including this, the most unique mammal of them all. Also known, or referred to, as "The Duck Billed Platypus" it is a semi-aquatic egg laying mammal endemic to eastern Australia and Tasmania togeather with the four species of Echidna it is one of five "extant"series Monotremes,, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth. This is the sole living member of its family though a number of related species have been found in the fossil records. The unusual appearance of this Egg laying, Duck billed, Beaver tailed, Otter footed mammal baffled European naturalists and scientists when they first encountered it with some considering it to be an elaborate hoax. This is one of the few Venomous mammals, as the male has a spur on the hind foot that delivers a venom capable of causing severe pain. The Platypus is the "Animal Emblem" of the State of New South Wales and is also on the reverse side of the 20 cent coin.

THE BILBY. |
A nice card of a similar release by Australia Post on Australian Native Animals . First day of release Maxi cards on the 01 July 2011.released in greenbushes WA 6254. The Bilby would have to be one of the nicest of our Native Animals and is in a very difficult period of time as it is so endangered.. There are many conservation places working hard to get this guy back from the "brink".
Bilbies are an Australian marsupial that is endangered and to raise money and increase awareness to the conservation efforts 'Bilby" shaped chocolates and various merchandise are sold in many stores throughout Australia as an alternative to Easter bunnies..

EASTERN GREY KANGAROO. |

HELLO !! YOUNG JOEY. |
Melbourne : AUSTRALIA.. EASTERN GREY KANGAROO IN FLIGHT..
This card is the last in the series of six ( 6 ) Australian "Native Animals" cards recently released by Australia Post on 13 January 2015. These are all " first day of release" maxi cards in this series..
This card (top ) is The Easter Grey Kangaroo one of many different species of these marsupials to be found in Australia.. The Eastern grey Kangaroo is found in eastern and also some southern parts of Australia., with a population of more than seven million and is also known as "The Great Grey Kangaroo" or the "Forrester Kangaroo" Although a great grey eastern Kangaroo typically masses at 66 kgs in weight (145 lbs) and stands at two meters ( 6.6 ) ft tall the scientific name ( macropus giganteus) giant large foot ...is misleading as The" Red Kangaroo" of the semi-arid inland is much larger weighing as much as 90 kilos.Although the Red Kangaroo is better known, it is the eastern Grey Kangaroo that is most often encountered in Eastern Australia. Like all Kangaroos it is nocturnal and seen mainly in the very early morning or when the sun is setting in the evening..and can be very aggressive around mating time. This is a time if you are driving to be exceptionally careful of Kangaroo "strikes" in you car as these can lead to extremely bad outcomes for both parties involved..not to mention a wrecked motor vehicle. The Easter grey Kangaroos colour is a light- grey or brownish-grey with a light silver or cream sometimes white belly. The highest ever recorded speed was 64 kph ( 40 ) mph.

Isn't this just a lovely card!!..Another in the Australian " Native Animal" series just released by Australia Post on 13 January 2015 in Greenbushes WA..6254. These are a "first day release" set of maxi cards.. This card shows a Koala bear with young.. Really they are just a lovely animal but unfortunatly their habitat which is a small, is being destroyed by deforrestation of its habitat ,for developers and housing..motor vehicles and dogs also take a large toll on these animals.
The Koala Bear is a herbivourous, aboreal marsupial native to Australia and is the only extant representative of its family and its closest living relative is a wombat. The Koala is found in the coastal areas of the mainlands eastern and southern regions including the states of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria , and South Australia. The Koala is easily recognised by its stout, tail less body, round, Fluffy ears and large spoon shaped nose. The Koala has a body length of 60 -85 cms (24-33 inches ) and weighs in at about 4 - 15 kgs (9-33 lbs. ). Their colour can vary from silver grey to chocolate brown. Koalas from the northern populations are typically smaller and lighter in colour than their southern counterparts. Koalas typically inhabit open Eucalypt woodlands and the leaves of these trees make up most of their diet and because this diet has limited nutritional value the koala can sleep up to 20 hours a day. The large bushfires recently on the east coast have heavily affected Koala populations. They are becoming close to en endangered species..

Here is another card in this wonderful new series of Australian Native Animals recently released by Australia Post all being first day of release maxi cards..This card is another favourite..The" Common Wombat".. You really have to love these guys . They are fun to watch as they "waddle" along . This is another of our precious wildlife that takes a large toll by traffic and uncaring drivers. Wombats are a very short legged, muscular ,Quadrupedal marsupials, that are native to Australia and are approximately 1 meter in length (40 inches ) with short stubby tails.. all are adaptable in habitat tolerance and are found in forrested, mountainous, and heathland areas of south eastern Australia including Tasmania, as well as an isolated patch of about 300 hectares in the Epping Forrest National Park in Central Queensland. Wombats dig extensive burrow systems with their strong claws and rodent like front teeth. One distinctive adaption of Wombats is their backward facing pouch This is a distinct advantage so as when it is digging the soil does not go all over its young in the pouch. Although mainly nocturnal wombats will still venture out to feed on cool or overcast days. Wombats colour can vary from sandy colour to brown or from grey to black..They are herbivores that diet consists of grasses ,sedges, herbs , barks , and roots. There are three different types of Wombats that all live in Australia and are protected by law..

Melbourne :AUSTRALIA:: ECHIDNA
This is another in the recently released series of Australian Native Animals by Australia Post. A truly lovely series of the very unique marsupials. This card shows The ant eating Echidna., usually a very shy animal but can be seen quite often even around city areas in the local bushland...Usually seen camouflaged in leaf litter. Also known as a "Spiny Anteater" this Echidna is a monotreme and belongs to the family of egg laying mammals. The four extant species togeather with the "Platypus" are the only surviving members of that order and are the only extant mammals that lay eggs.Their diet consists of ants and termites. and their colour is usually black or brown. They live in Australia and New Guinea and are in no way realted to the American Ant eaters.

Australia
This is another card in the new release series by Australia Post of "Native Animals" and this a real favourite of mine The Tasmanian Devil. An unmistakeable character one always thinks of the Walt Disney Character in the cartoons.
The Tasmanian Devil is a carnivorous marsupial of the ( Dasyuridae) family and is now found only in the wild of The Australian State of Tasmania. The size of a small dog The Tasmanian Devil became the largest carnivorous marsupial in the world following the extinction of the "Thylacine" (The Tasmanian Tiger ) in 1936 .Some say it still survives (The Thylacine ) in the remote wilderness of Tasmania.. The Tasmanian Devil is characterised by its muscular and stocky build with black and white fur, pungent odour and its extremely and disturbing screech, very keen sense of Smell and its ferocity when feeding. The Tasmanian Devils large head and neck allow it to generate amongst the hardest and strongest bite among any per unit body mass of any extant land based predator it hunts prey and scavenges on carrion. despite its rotund appearance the Devil is capable of surprising speed and endurance and can climb trees and swim across rivers.Since the late 1990's (The devils facial tumour disease ) has drastically reduced the Devils population and now threatens the survival of the species.

This is a lovely card in a series on "Native Animals" just released by Australia Post a series of "First day release " Maxi cards. Released 13 January 2015 Greenbushes WA.
This card shows an excelent view of the lovely Numbat. The Numbat ( Genus Myrmecobius ) is the sole member of the family ( Myrmecobiiae ) an Australian marsupial carnivore. Two sub species are recognised but one of these, the (rusty ) Numbat has been extinct since the 1960's.
The Numbat is a small, colourful creature about 35 to 45 Centimeters long about (14 to 18 inches) long including the tail., with a pointed muzzle and a prominent "bushy tail" the same length as its body. Numbats are insectivores and eat an exclusive diet of termites., an adult Numbat needs about 20.000 termites every day. The Numbat is the only marsupial completely active during the day and spends his time exclusively looking for termites.it digs them up from loose earth with its claws and captures them with its long sticky tongue. Unfortunately these lovely small marsupials are on the endangered list.

This is another in the series of Australian Native Animals. This card is a "First day release " Maxi card Perth WA. Released 20 August 2012. The Quokka was one of the first native Australian animals seen by Europeans who thought that they were large rodents. The Dutch explorers thought that they were rats hence the name of the Island " Rats Nest" The Quokka is the only member of the genus, "Setonix" and is a small Macropod about the size of a domestic cat. Like other marsupials in the Macropod family (such as the Kangaroos and Wallabies ) the Quokka is herbivourous and is nocturnal. The Quokka can be found on some Islands off the coast of Perth Western Australia in particular Rottnest Island and also Bald Island near Albany. They usually weigh around 3-5 kilos and are fairly short for a Macropod with a stocky build. The ones that I encountered on Rottnest Island were not bothered when I got close to photograph them..and are an extremely lovely little macropod.
